nroc
Project Overview:
The brief for this project was to design a high-end furniture piece for an international design competition in collaboration with Carpanelli and Ideas4Wood, using Tabu veneers as the primary material. Beginning with competition research, I analyzed precedents in luxury furniture, material expression, and mechanical integration across tables and seating. The project challenged me to explore movement as a design feature, incorporating a deliberate mechanism, like hinging or sliding, to enable transformation and interaction. The design was developed around a personal theme rooted in childhood memories and experiences growing up in Canada, using narrative and symbolism to inform form, material expression, and interaction. Through iterative concept development, material studies, and scale modeling, the project became an investigation into how craftsmanship, motion, and veneer patterning can work together to elevate both function and visual identity.

nroc features a slatted side assembly that flows into the backrest, creating a cornrow-esque armrest. Its chamfer detail contributes to the flow and emphasizes the joining of each βrowβ. The field-inspired seat is broken into three sections, creating a unique cushion made of earth-toned fabrics. With its rotating base design, it creates a relaxing armchair built for conversation, connecting, and leisure.
